ALDI

From its humble roots as a small store opened in 1913 in Essen, Germany, ALDI has grown to span the entire country of its origin. Additionally, ALDI operates more than 10,000 stores across the globe. In 2017, as part of its expansion into the United States, ALDI announced its plans to open about 2,500 stores in the country by 2022. Given the success of ALDI as the company continues to bring its European-style grocery stores to the United States and beyond, it’s worth noting the many reasons why the company is a good one to work for.

Stores Worldwide

Currently, ALDI has a presence in 20 countries across the globe with about 10,000 stores. This extensive network could make it easier for employees with military spouses or those who want to move to find comparable employment with the company in a different area of the United States or even another country.

Good Pay

ALDI offers its employees above-average pay. Though these industry-leading wages may vary depending on the area of the United States you’re working in, associates make about $12 per hour while a shift manager can pull in $16 hourly. Wages for store management start $23 per hour for a trainee with a store manager making about $75,000 yearly. Many employees average 50 to 60 hours per week with paid overtime.

Benefits

ALDI sets the bar with its benefits package. After 90 days, most employees are eligible for health insurance for themselves and their dependents which includes dental and vision as well as their choice of employer-matched traditional or Roth 401K. Paid time off (PTO), vacation days and sick days are offer and accrue if unused. District managers also receive a company vehicle paid by ALDI as well as a paid company iPhone.

Advancement Opportunities

Advancement opportunities at ALDI are often offered to current employees. Because ALDI stores maintain a fairly small core team of employees, it’s easier for them to be noticed for their hard work and exceptional effort. Being offered a managerial position after about one year of employment is not unusual at ALDI.

Diverse Job Offerings

Most people think of a grocery store as having cashiers, stockers and managers. While these positions are available, the setup at ALDI is a bit different. Often a shift is comprised of a store manager and a cashier with an average of about six positions throughout the store.

ALDI also provides ample opportunities beyond its grocery stores. These include warehouse staff and IT division, as well as corporate jobs like an administrative assistant and internships.

Reasonable Hours

The typical ALDI store opens at nine in the morning and closes at nine or 10 that night. A morning shift often starts a few hours before the store opens to provide enough time to empty the grocery pallets. There’s no concern about having to work late into the night or to work overnight hours because ALDI doesn’t offer them.

Store Managers Don’t Need a Degree

ALDI has a policy of advancing its employees from within the organization. For example, a store manager often previously worked as a cashier at the company. Additionally, store managers don’t need a college degree which opens up this lucrative position to more people.

Award-Winning Employers

As a company, ALDI expects its employees to work hard while they are on the clock and rewards them with above-average pay and industry-leading benefits. This approach has made ALDI a prolific winner of numerous awards from some of the business world’s most respected names.

Since 2017, ALDI has received more than 300 recognitions and grocery product awards including the 2018 Retailer of the Year, according to Supermarket News. Also in 2018, as well as in 2017, ALDI was recognized by the National Association for Business Resources for being one of the “Best and Brightest Companies to Work For in the Nation.”

Forbes has long recognized that ALDI has something special to offer its employees. For four years running so far — from 2015 through 2018 — the company was listed as one of “America’s Best Employers” by Forbes. It was also named as a “Best Employer for Women” and a “Best Employer for New Grads” by Forbes. In both 2018 and 2019, ALDI received Indeed’s “Best Places to Work: Compensation and Benefits.”

It’s easy to see why ALDI has been so well-received across the United States during its expansion. Both shoppers and employees embrace the company’s different way of approaching the grocery store concept.
